Biography: Pan Dehai was born in 1956 in Si Ping City, Jilin Province, China. He graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Northeast Normal University in Changchun, Jilin Province in 1982.

Pan’s paintings have been included in numerous exhibitions throughout Asia. Such shows include the 1988 and 1989 “China Contemporary Art Exhibition” in Beijing, the “Annual Exhibition of Oil Painting” in the Chinese History and military Museum in 1996, Beijing and the “Reality, Today and Tomorrow” exhibition at the International Art gallery, Beijing in 1991. Since the 1990’s, Pan has gained international attention through several exhibitions such as the “2000 Art Exhibition” held in France (2000), the “Asian Contemporary Art Exhibition” held in London (2000) and “Girls and Boys” held at the Soobin Art Gallery, Singapore (2001). Pan also won a prize at the 7th National Fine Arts Exhibition held at the National Art Museum, Beijing (1989).

Although Pang Dehai’s paintings feature cherubic figures, they manage to elude the grim label of “cute” art. Instead, the paintings exhibit a sinister humor brought about by the serial pixilation that serves and paintings’ building blocks. This repetitive pattern is often echoed in the composition itself. The inflated figures occupy the canvas like some highly disciplined cloned army. Pang said “I want to focus on the subject of obesity, a common phenomenon in modern society and a product of modernization. Obesity is the most obvious embodiment of the problems of urban living……Obesity is aggressive and possessive. It comes from increasing gluttony. Obesity is a most vivid and symbolic state.”

Pang’s choice of colours – the electric blues, the vivid pinks, the grays of immense variety – inject an additional sense of surreal eeriness into these unsettlingly magnetic, subtly paranoid paintings.
