Biography: A self-taught artist, Husain is a man of many facets. From calligraphy to film making he has painted his canvas of experience in multicoloured hues. By 1955 he was one of the leading artists in India to be awarded Padma Shri. He was a special invitee along with Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1971. He won the Golden Bear at the International Film Festival at Berlin in 1967 for his film Through the Eyes of a Painter and has made two other films - Gaja Gamini and Meenaxi and Tale of Three Cities since then. He has participated in many international shows which include Contemporary Indian Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1982, Six Indian Painters, Tate Gallery, London, in 1985, Contemporary Indian Art, Grey Art Gallery, New York in 1986, Coups de Coeur, Halles de L'lle Geneva in 1987 and many more.
He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and Padma Vibhushan in 1989.
