Biography: Deb has completed his professional diploma in Fine Arts and Craft from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan followed by a post diploma from Faculty Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda. Being a member of Painters Orchestra, he has held regular group shows since 1968. He has the credit for publishing 99 papers on Nandalal Bose and on art education. These are to be found in the journal of the Faculty of Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. According to Deb, the connotation of visual creativity does not hold on to any ‘ism’ or style, but is an outcome of spontaneous playfulness happening as a process of introspection and submission. He has had several solo shows in Kolkata in the year ’74, ’76, ’78, and ’81. In 2001 “Works in Paper” was shown by CIMA Gallery. Besides, he has participated in an exhibition of ‘Stained Glass’ organized by Faculty of Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and “Art of Heart’ workshop dedicated to unfortunate children with heart disease. His work has been as a collection with the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Delhi Art Gallery.

De has graduated from Government College of Arts, Kolkata in 1975. He has had several one man shows and group shows in every major metropolitan cities of India since 1976. Yet participation in Banga Sanskriti Sammelan, Calcutta Metropolitan Festival of Art, 1995 and Millennium Festival of Art in 2000 are some of the prestigious ones in his career. His most recent participation has been at the Singapore Art Festival, 2006.

Sunil De is essentially an abstract painter who sees non-figurative forms within figurative manifestations. It is like a sudden revelation where matter breaks into colours forming a visual music of sequences of warmth and coldness.
