Biography: Sen is one of the pioneers of Indian modern art movement who along with some other artists in Kolkata formed the 'Calcutta Group' in 1943. After completing his course in Govt. School of Art, Chennai, he studied at Andre Lhote's School, Academy Grand Chaumier, Ecole des Beaux arts and Ecole des Louvre in Paris. With several exhibitions in India and abroad, he has a huge collection of his works with National Gallery Of Modern Art, Rashtrapati Bhavan, The British museum, Bharat Bhavan and Bhopal among others. His drawings and paintings are noted for their strong lines and bold, stylized strokes. A recurrent subject in Sen's works is the depiction of scenes from urban life, where he uses, volume, figuration and sharp irony to depict myriad emotions. He has been awarded several times and has won fellowship from the French Govt. and grants from Rockefeller Foundation, USA. However, more recently he was conferred with Lalit Kala Ratna by Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in 2004.
