Artist Statement:
I have chosen the form of furniture as the means to communicate my solid belief in the profound beauty of the handmade. Utilizing the methodical pace my artworks require to be constructed, I am making a statement against mass-production and insensitivity to the small details of daily life. I deliberately use Baltic birch plywood for its fine striations, and enjoy the striped details that occur when used with traditional joinery. Each piece of furniture features hand-dyed, hand-woven cloth, as a design element.
Stripes are woven and dyed into the cloth to coordinate with the striped woodworking. The same dyes are used on the wood as on the cloth, for maximum color coordination between the two elements. I hope that my efforts of time and attention to create these reflective and participatory objects by hand offer a beautiful antidote for the frenetic atmosphere in which contemporary society functions.
