George Mamos - Represented by Sunflower Fine Art & Frame
( United States, 1955 - present )

Artist: George Mamos ( United States, 1955 - present )

Main Category: Painting
Genres: Post-Impressionism, Contemporary Realism, American Regionalism

Biography: A painter in the Realist style, George Mamos completed two years of drawing classes followed by four years of formal art training at Brooklyn College in New York to obtain a BA in Fine Arts; however he considers himself mostly self taught from studying the works of many other artists.

He married at the age of 25, and during the 1980's and 90's he supported his wife and four children by practicing law while painting in his spare time. In 2005 he returned to his lifelong passion and began painting full time.

Through the years he participated in various workshops, private classes, and paint outs. Most of his work since the 1990 consisted of figures, portraits and still lives in oil. Early in his life he created a series of iconography which were exhibited at Lincoln Center.

His influences are too numerous to mention but some of his mentors and favorites are John Singer Sargent, Maxfield Parrish, Nicolai Fechin, followed more recently by the fluid and loose styles of Richard Schmid, and Daniel Gerhartz, as well as the natural art of Robert Bateman.

Artist Quotes:
“I have always believed in keeping life in balance, and most of all the beauty of family, God and nature. I believe the most important part of a painting is the personal vision it creates. Painting is the window to viewing the world through someone else's eyes."

The complexities of interweaving various forms, color, and brushwork styles (like a Bach concerto) but keeping true to a uniform style, and flow is my concept of good art.

The following appeared in a New York City publication:

"Local Artist Leaves Impression At Belmont "

One of the owners of the racehorse "Hard Spun", was in town to race his horse at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday June 9th. "Hard Spun" placed 2nd at the Kentucky Derby earlier this year and 3rd at the Preakness. He finished in 4th place at Belmont.

While attending the Garden City Belmont Festival and street fair, "Hard Spuns" owner stopped by Sunflower Fine Art, on 7th street, and purchased a beautiful oil painting of a thoroughbred horse by local artist George Mamos. He said he loved the mood expressed in the painting and looked forward to adding it to his collection.

Mr. Mamos, a member of Oil Painters of America, has exhibited his paintings nationally and his portraits grace the walls of lovely homes from Westchester to the Hamptons. His work is represented locally by Sunflower Fine Art; who is in the process of publishing an affordable series of limited edition giclee entitled "Wall Street".
