Biography: PAUL FLIPPEN BIOGRAPHY
Paul Flippen was born in Berlin, Germany, and as an Army Brat bounced around between Germany, Texas and California at the whim of the Pentagon.
He earned a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History, both from the University of Texas at Austin. He completed his studies at Pratt Institute, New York, receiving an MFA in Painting and an MS in the Theory, Criticism and History of Art.
Prior to arriving at Colorado State University in Fort Collins to teach Foundations Painting, Paul taught painting, foundations and graduate seminars at Wichita State University in Kansas.
Paul is a painter whose work features layers of pattern, abstraction, and imagery that communicate through several visual languages simultaneously, inviting the viewer to enter a dialog with the work. Fields of color are overlaid with crisp-edged patterns and representations that imply personal narratives.
His work has been shown in galleries and museums nationally, including solo exhibitions in New York, Texas, throughout the Mid-West and in the Washington DC metro area. Paul most recently completed paintings for exhibitions at the Haydon Arts Center in Lincoln, Nebraska and Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Paul has received grants or awards from the Leopold Schepp Foundation, the Kansas Cultural Trust, and the Kansas Arts Commission.
Paul is happily married to a very patient wife, Jennifer, and tries to spend as much time as possible with his daughter, Claire, who rides her tricycle in the halls of the Visual Arts building when there is too much snow outside. She’s rather fond of the ramp in the hall between Printmaking and Drawing.
