Biography: Born in Philadelphia in well to do family. Founding member of the Philadelphia Ten, a group of early women painters. Studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and then Art Student League of New York. Studied for a while in Paris. Lived in New York, and then in Massachusetts in 1922, where she was active in the Gloucester art colony.
Bernstein was known for her distinctive city landscapes of New York. Her still life and figures use bold and vigorous brush strokes.
