Biography: Laurie Horton is a fisherman. Margaret Horton, his wife is a Personal Care Worker. In 1994 they both found themselves out of work and needing something to do. One day they took a walk along the beach where Margaret found an interesting piece of driftwood. She picked it up, showed it to Laurie and thought that it resembled something. She figured out that it was a duck, took it home and painted it. After that they moved from Truro to Pubnico so Laurie could continue fishing and started making their beach folk art. The folk art is made by collecting driftwood off the beaches in Southwestern Nova Scotia. They study the shape then create animals, birds or people by adding other bits of wood. Their creations are one-of-a-kind and very whimsical.
