Biography: Glen Hinz
Traditional Sonoran/Southwestern Fine Art is what Glen Hinz is all about. Glen has made copper, which is so closely associated with Sonoran Culture, Arizona, and the Southwest, his medium. His 3D Pictorial Copper Relief Sculptures are beautiful examples of Fine Southwestern Sonoran Art. His 3D Pictorial Copper Relief Sculptures are shown at galleries throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. In addition to the work he does for his large following of private owners, Glen also has performed many commissions for major hotels, shopping centers, banks, corporate offices, and many government buildings including the Arizona Superior Court Building. Glen has been a full-time professional artist for over 27 years.
Glen achieves his uniquely beautiful and timeless sculptures by the use of various tooling and hammering techniques, some of which he had to develop himself. He, unlike many other metal working artists, actually works on both side of the metal, thus allowing the creation of many different dimensions and textures. His work is then painstakingly colored, using chemical oxidants and small water-color brushes, with a degree of control and enhanced effect that places his work on a level of its own. The piece is meticulously cleaned and hand-buffed to complete the effect. To insure the lasting quality of the piece, a minimum of two (2) coats of the finest metal lacquer is applied.
All of Glen's work is individually framed and matted, with the matting done in such a way as to create the feeling of a shadowbox.
The American Southwest has been called the most beautiful and sublime of lands, and Sonoran cultures have dominated this region for over 2000 years. From the mountains and canyons to the deserts and forest, from red rocks to red cliffs, with the days of scorching heat followed by nights of bone-chilling cold, nowhere else in the Southwest are the contrasts so striking. The Native American cultures in this area have a traditional and exciting beauty, and nowhere is the soul and essence Southwestern Art more striking that in the works of Glen Hinz.
