Biography: Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo, born in Havana, Cuba, emigrated to the United States in 1988 and settled in Miami. He went to New York to study art at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. While in New York his paintings were shown at the Visual Arts Gallery in SoHo and at 135 Skillman Street in Brooklyn. Gerardo returned to Miami in 1997 and has exhibited his work extensively in traditional and alternative spaces. Gerardo’s paintings have been written about in The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Diario Las Americas, and The New Times. He was a featured artist in Casa & Estilo Internacional Magazine (Octubre/Noviembre 2001). He illustrated the book Frases de El Procaz Euardo by Eduardo B. Ferrer (1999). His fan design was selected to be included in the catalog for “Fan Exhibition” in Tokyo, Japan (1996).
Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo’s paintings and “wall hangings” are made by gathering different images, memories, and rhythms together in one composition. The layering and overlapping of images that occurs during the painting process is a significant aspect of his artwork. He cuts and pieces together different fragments of paintings, digital imagery, and fabrics when creating his “wall hangings” and room installations. When he creates paintings on a stretched canvas, they are constantly turned around and worked in all directions. This method of working allows for the exploration of more dynamic possibilities in balance and composition. Gerardo’s way of connecting these ideas creates a discord/harmony similar to that in jazz. The language of jazz and his experiences in the urban landscape serve as major inspirations for his work.
