Biography: About the Artist
Born in Houston, Texas, I am fifth generation Texas of Comanche descent. Art, or “drawing” as my father called it, was important to my entire family although none of us received formal training. Basically, I’m self-taught and continue to study and learn. I’ve recently began building and working with wood frame panels, painting acrylics over collage.
My primary experience and training is in the field of education of which I hold an M.Ed. I have been a teacher for approximately 17 years plus 10 years of experience in the fields of banking, real estate. As previously stated, from an early age, I loved to draw and paint. Then until now, I continued to educate myself in several different mediums including watercolor, jewelry making, decoration. I believe teaching A.P. European History, inspired my latest passion to paint. The course requires the study of the major art periods and artists of European History from 1350 to present.
Lastly, I’ve recently joined the Plano Art Association to expose myself to other artists, styles, techniques and for deeper involvement in this world.
The Art Process
The process begins with building heavy wood frames or panels Of various sizes but usually large. Continuing with a base/wash of acrylic paint, back and front. A bright color of either pink, blue, green, turquoise, or red is painted on the frame back. Next, collage style hand cut paper is applied and overlays the pencil drawn image(s). The next stage involves painting using acrylics. The painting is completed with permanent marker for greater detail of images. Lastly, coats of polyurethane are applied as sealant and to provide an "oil" painting look. The best description of my art is “Texas folk art using acrylics over collage” in the category of “multiple media.”
