ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
Painting has always seemed to be part of my inner workings. Whether wandering through the south of France, driving Oregon’s back roads, exploring my home state of Texas, working in my garden or even looking through a stack of beautiful fabrics, all these are inspirations for my work. Creation seems to be imbued with life, spirit and design and it is that beauty and presence that intrigues me.
I am also drawn to archetypical images like the cross. It represents a mystery, the intersection of the divine and the human, spirit and matter, death and re-birth, love and hate. I never tire of peeling back the layers of meaning by exploring the cross and each time I paint it I feel a fresh sense of grace and beauty.
I love to see rich earth colors suspended in oil or water. I also enjoy the way gold leaf can bring the surface of an icon alive. Or the way the energy of a brush stroke interacts with a shape. In the end, a painting has to stand on its own, sometimes a cross, and at times depicting nature, or simply a statement with layers of paint on a canvas. The real pleasure is the journey.
