Biography: Maurice Galbraith Cullen was born in St. John's Newfoundland in 1866. Cullen was originally interested in sculpting, but after experiencing the work of French Impressionist Claude Monet, Cullen decided that painting was a better form of expression. In 1888, he began studying painting in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he met fellow Canadian Impressionist James Wilson Morrice.

In 1894, he exhibited at the French Salon, before becoming an associate of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Cullen returned to Montreal in 1895 where he began painting urban and rural landscapes in Quebec.

After exhibiting in many successful shows at Montreal’s Watson galleries, Cullen passed away in 1934 at the age of 68. Cullen’s work often portrays the winter season of the Canadian landscape. He paved the way for future Canadian artists, as his work became successful in the Canadian market without conforming to the popular style of the time. He applied French impressionism techniques to Canadian subject matter. Maurice Galbraith Cullen is often considered the "father" of impressionism in Canada.
