Biography: Gonzalo Centelles was born in Barcelona in 1980. Educated at the Llotja and in the College of Fine Arts Sant Jordi, both in Barcelona. Currently, he teaches drawing, painting and cartoon in the school of fine arts Traç. He lives and works in the Catalan capital.
This is a young artist as reflected in his creations. His work is very similar to the illustration, exhibiting a style that reminds the world of comics, one of the subjects that he teaches. He portrays the interiors of bars, urban environments, traffic in the cities, and an entire cast of characters of the aforementioned urban environments, some of them socially marginalized, others late-nighters, reflecting everyday reality characters and scenes that are daily repeated in certain environments of all cities.
These characters, sometimes are portrayed in an ironic way. However, there is a common thread in all of them, is the fact that Gonzalo Centelles presents them with their own psychology that is transmitted in a very direct way to the observer.
This own personality in each of his characters is the element that helps to create an environment, an environment in which these everyday situations come alive and provoke immersion in the work by the viewer.
Another peculiarity to highlight the work of Centelles is its unquestioned support in the use of colour. Most of his works show a great forcefulness colour, contrast and interactions that make a very dynamic vision of his paintings.
To this dynamism, it also contributes the compositional structure of the work itself, where we appreciate approaches that may be classified as unique in some of their works, through which the observer is situated directly on the scene.
Technically, he shows a stroke with decision, with determination and security, offering also a very interesting view in terms of brightness and darkness, closely related to the aforementioned game based on the colour contrasts.
Undoubtedly, we are facing an emergent artist with a good technical foundation that provides a work matured to this interesting presentation in which we can appreciate the environments in which we are placed by this young creator, Gonzalo Centelles.
