Biography: Saul Alvarez graduated with an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, (Valencia CA, 2007) after receiving a BA from the University of California Irvine, (Irvine CA, 2003).

Since 2007, Saul Alvarez is an Adjunct Faculty-History of Photography at Woodbury University (Burbank, CA) and an assistant wood & metal shop technician at Otis College of Art & Design, (Los Angeles, CA).

Alvarez's past experiences led him to be a head fabricator, carpenter, drafter metal shop technician, after school program coordinator, sculpture studio technician and production assistant at many local institutions, organizations and venues - such as Redcat Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Dig-it Designs (Venice, CA), California Institute of the Art (Valencia, CA), North Valley Caring Services (North Hills, CA), John L Blom Custom Photography (Corona Del Mar, CA), and UC Irvine Sculpture Studio, (Irvine, CA).

Alvarez's practice consists of locating junctures in space, time and history were slippage occurs between what is real and what is theoretical. He rearrange various narratives that extend from the mundane to the fantastic in order to realign or shift a current perspective. Saul Alvarez's work relies heavily on source imagery taken from numerous contexts. His sculptures, photographs and drawings take on a cinematic quality because the artist employs the visual vocabulary of film and popular culture. Through this process he interchanges notions of history with mythology, the empirical present with the simulacra of the media, and the discourse of the future with that of science fiction. Each binary relationship operates as a mirror onto each other and onto the world it self. The meta narrative is no more, shattered, and each fragment and shard is capable of cutting its own line. Where these new lines, vectors, intersect is were Saul's work manifests. Ultimately the artist's practice is a project of understanding and interpretation, the excavation of meaning and truth from the rubble of history.
