Biography: Dana M. Groff
Dana Groff has always appreciated his natural surroundings more than those made by man. Having been born and raised in south Tampa, he has drawn inspiration from natural settings that typify Florida and its endangered wilderness. He has also lived in Naples, FL and west Tennessee and that has given him a different influence of these diverse locales.
Groff often uses photography to capture composition or an aspect of it. His work is not limited to scenery, however. While Groff works primarily in oil, acrylic and mixed media, his subjects may vary from inanimate objects (such as an old car in a field) to wildlife or even a female subject in a contrived setting. On occasion, his renderings will convey a social or cultural statement for the viewer to discern. Groff states, “In my endeavor, I am not on a crusade but rather a mission to produce work that pleases the soul of this artist.”
Groff considers himself somewhere between an illustrator and a contemporary realist with some background in marketing. Groff feels he has no real style but prefers certain techniques in his work; alterations that produce unique results. He generally seeks out the medium that best suits the work and if he had the liberty, a medium that compliments his mood at the time.
“As a visual artist, I see the world not only as it is, but as it could be.”
