Exhibition History: “Japan; A Nisei’s First Encounter,”
Doug Beasley
Seeking a stronger emotional and visual connection to his heritage, Doug Beasley received a Jerome Travel Study Grant to photograph how the sacred is incorporated into everyday life in Japan. Although Doug has traveled and photographed all over the world on assignment and teaching photography workshops he had never been to his Mother’s homeland of Japan. It was like returning to place he had never been, exotic yet comfortable and familiar. He visited relatives in a 18th century Samurai home, Zen Temples, Shinto Shrines, Japanese gardens, Hiroshima, the great Torji Gate at Miya Jima and his Mother’s home island of Innoshima, where he went to the cemetery where his ancestors go back for centuries.
This book is a first impression of a place he hopes to return again and again. Doug’s images provide glimpses of ordinary life in an extraordinary place, often revealing the subtle beauty of the sacred.
Signed copies of Doug’s hand bound book “Japan; A Neisi’s First Encounter” are available through Gallery Print at a special price of $24.00 plus shipping. Info about Vision Quest photo workshops and more of his photographs can be seen at http://www.Vqphoto.com
