Rabbit Remix:
C.A.Galerija is pleased to present the first solo show in Croatia of the Brazilian-born artist Eduardo Kac that will open on March 28, 2007. The show entitled Rabitt Remix will present consequences of a seminal artistic action: creation of a fluorescent rabbit, commissioned by the artist in 1999 and created by the French scientists in 2000.
Like Duchamp Fountain, Alba is a work that most people saw only in photographs. Through genetic engineering, a jellyfish gene was injected in the egg of a rabbit and an albino bunny was born that, under special light conditions, turned fluorescent. The implications of accepting such a concept as a work of art became immediately obvious and caused a world-wide uproar. The news about the bunny produced headlines in the Boston Globe and Le Monde and caused heated reactions from animal activists, scientists and the general public. Regarding Alba in the light of Kac other concepts and works ranging from telepresence, the use of internet and robotics, or early political peformances on Ipanema beach in Rio, it is clear that Alba is a part of a larger political concept GFP Bunny aimed at looking at a gentically produced object in terms of social subject (as Kac idea was to integrate the rabbit into a gallery environment and later into society) and raising awareness about the new boundaries of the Brave New World: to master no longer the environment but the living being. Like Orlane, Kac has used (electronic) implants as well as injections of synthetic genes to reflect that our environment and we ourselves are already transmuted, prosthetic and that nothing is strictly virtual or real, human or machine anymore, but a (re)mix.
Eduardo Kac is an internationally renowned artist based in Chicago. Since 1980s, he has created visionary works of art for which tne terms like telepresence art or transgenic art had to be coined. His work has been performed and exhibited across Latin Amerika, the US, Europe and Asia. He is the recepient of many awards and grants, and professor at the School of the Art Institue of Chicago
