Agony and Ecstasy
Subtle, provocative, ebullient or broken, what does it really take for an artist to allude to human form? In a larger sense, ‘Agony and Ecstasy’ – an exhibition of figurative paintings brings together artists who seek to redefine the norms of figurative painting to meet new emotional demands put upon the genre as the new century unfolds. Bodies are rendered in a new way that both appropriate references to art history, particularly expressionist painting and as a dynamic that can only be described as of our time: visceral, kinetic and close to abstraction. It is the intent of these painters to give figuration another chance at relevancy in relation to our times -- to "refit" the figure to its old role as personification, only this time that which is being personified is the interior dialogue of the painter.
Artists to participate in this show are: Aditya Basak, Ashoke Mullick, Asit Mondal,Chattarpati Dutta, Kanchan Dasgupta, Manoj Dutta, Paresh Maity, Partha Pratim Deb, Prasenjit Sengupta, Sekhar Roy, Sheikh Shahjahan and Tapas Konar .
