“Green Thoughts/Recent Landscapes” is Mari Lyons’s thirteenth exhibition at First Street
Gallery - and her first of country images in ten years. Previous recent shows have been of
studio interiors, still lifes, figure studies, and a series of highly praised urban landscapes made
in her New York studio on the busy corner of Broadway and 80th Street.
The title “ Green Thoughts” is drawn from those marvelous and haunting lines in
Andrew Marvel’s poem “The Garden”:
“Annihilating all that’s made
To a green thought in a green shade.”
The new paintings, all made in her studio in Woodstock, New York, are intimate, painterly, and
imbued with a vibrant energy that has been one of the salient qualities of her work for many
years.
Unlike the images of the vast Montana spaces she painted in the 1980’s, these new landscapes
are connected to an individual oak or magnolia tree, a well-loved courtyard behind her studio,
the tree-filled hillside beyond her window - and they display inevitable differences according
to the season in which they were painted. These are very personal paintings of mostly green
things in the natural world that surrounds the place in which the painter works - a green world
to which she feels especially attached.
