ÉCOLE DE PARIS
This cannot be called an artistic movement or tendency. The “School of Paris” must be considered as a group of painters from different nationalities who worked in Paris for a long period of years. Many of them were Jews, Bulgarians, Russians, Spaniards ... everyone was looking for the best conditions for the expression of their talent, and for the freedom to paint. Paris is a myth, the symbol of that freedom. Bateau Lavoir and Montparnasse gave them hospitality, and meeting places such as La Rotonde, Le Dôme and La Coupole allowed them to meet in lively discussions. Extreme poverty continued to prevail but also friendship, the theme of the meeting of artists from the School of Paris is the belief in art as a universal language, the only one that allows communication and peace amongst men. It may be recalled that during the Spanish civil war, many artists were exiled to the French capital.
In this exhibition we have tried to collect some of the most important painters of this school.
We are pleased to exhibit the works of these great masters of painting, to whom we deeply respect, as a new project full of illusions which we will, undoubtedly, share together.
This exhibition opened at the Iris Gallery Restaurant of Hotel Estela Barcelona - Art Hotel in Sitges, on Friday 24th April 2009 at 20:00 pm, and may be accessed until May 21st.
