In the city, "You're all speeded up with the surprising light and vistas. I don't paint the city and have been thinking how very hard it is to paint," Ms. Rosenthal continues. The two painters in the exhibit, Mari Lyons and John Dubrow, look at the world outside their windows and paint from it. "For me, you have your haven in the city while all of life whirls beneath you. You're in your dream, this world you dream up every day. The city is a natural home for the artist." On the other hand, "the modern city is intense and you need to escape."
At the same time Ms. Rosenthal loves the New York art world, it also disheartens her that that world is corrupt. "How much time do you have?" she responds when asked to elaborate on that thought.
Here's how she describes the corruption in a nutshell: "A gigantic explosion of money came in to the art and cultural world in the '80s and has affected every aspect of the art world, from the way artists can't afford to work and live in the city to art schools training people to exhibit before receiving their degrees, providing students with vocational training," she says.
