The visual delight of 13

Published by Hindustan Times on 2007-04-12

There's news for those suffering from triskaidekaphobia, the irrational fear of the number 13. Creations by 13 artists, which adorn the immaculate white walls of Aakriti Art Gallery, might change your impression of the number. In contrast to the ominousness associated with 13, the oeuvre created by the supposedly unlucky total is actually an art connoisseur's delight. The exhibition titled Agony and Ecstasy, inaugurated on Saturday evening, brings together works of artists such as Aditya Basak, Asit Mondal, Partha Pratim Deb and Tapas Konar that wish to redefine the norms of figurative painting.

Agony and ecstasy predictably find prominence in the works. Whether it's the ecstatic state in which Singer captures two Bauls or the melancholy on the face of the boy in an untitled creation by Prasenjit Sengupta, most of the works are in sync with the theme. What makes the display interesting is the opportunity to read and comprehend the emotions in a spectrum of styles. Each painting seeks attention with a distinct style. Even those not conforming to the theme got their share of attention because of the beauty of the creation.

The human figures in a few paintings border on abstraction. Togetherness by Paresh Marty is predominantly red and there is vagueness about the definition of the human forms - probably an effort to redefine figurative art.

The works are for sale and priced between Rs 25,000 and Rs 26 lakh.
