Gallery Statement:
BABCOCK GALLERIES was established in 1852, and is the oldest gallery in the United States which has, from its inception, focused on American Art. Some highlights of the gallery's distinguished history include: an 1866 George Inness exhibition, in which PEACE AND PLENTY, now a mainstay in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was first exhibited; the 1939 appointment as agent for the estate of Thomas Eakins which led to his work being placed by the gallery in major public collections throughout the United States; a fifty year commitment placing works by Marsden Hartley in more than 60 museums; its important role in 1978 bringing to public attention the drawings of John F. Kensett; and in 1989, our appointment as exclusive agent for the heirs of Edwin Dickinson.

BABCOCK GALLERIES has always been an important source for the finest in American Art and it has placed major works by George Inness, Fitz Hugh Lane, John Kensett, Severin Roesen, Sanford Gifford, Winslow Homer, Ralph Albert Blakelock, Albert Pinkham Ryder, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hasam, Mary Cassatt, Max Weber, E. Ambrose Webster, Edwin Dickinson, Charles W. Hawthorne, John F. Carlson, Ernest Lawson, William Glackens, Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley, and other American masters in fine public and private collections. In the past five years more than sixty-five American museums and many important private collectors have acquired outstanding works of art from BABCOCK GALLERIES.
