Artist Statement

As an artist, teacher, herbalist, permaculturist and gardener I am constantly inspired by the natural and social beauty of my home place in Portland, O.R. I live in the SE with my husband, plant family, two ridiculously cute dogs and five super cuddly kitties. Some of my inspirations are social/political/environmental issues, tentacles and creatures of all sorts, the cosmos and outer space, mandalas, stories and narratives, the Tarot, plants, traveling, music, physics and the mystical. I dabble in all types of mediums and formats including but not limited to: acrylic, watercolor and water-soluble media, pens and pencils of all types and colors, paper, sculpture, assemblage, mixed media, metal, collage and much more.

My artwork is often allegorical utilizing symbolism, images and sometimes text. I strive to assist the viewer in exploring and attaining a heightened awareness of social, political or environmental issues and the cultural narratives we carry around with us. I like to create an aesthetic portal through which the viewer is invited to take a journey exploring the inner and outer landscape of the subject matter. I am very inspired by the textures, connections, patterns and physics to be found in the natural and social world. My work will often highlight these patterns, textures and connections and tends to be colorful, fantastical and based in the framework of a story or a question.

Most importantly my work aims to create open ended questions to ponder. It is also my fervent hope to create inspiration and wonder on emotional, intellectual and spiritual levels. I enjoy nothing more than helping the viewer make new connections and see new relationships between things in a whole systems manner. I also strive to facilitate a process of making new discoveries about the viewer’s own inner world with the hope of stimulating self growth. Finally if one of my pieces inspires it’s viewer to take action on a particular social/environmental/political issue this is one of the highest honors....
