  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Steve Kiene - My art expresses fundamental cosmological and spiritual concepts such as the balances in nature, regeneration and growth, and the interdependence of all things. I want to express how man & nature are interconnected. In today's modern culture, many have forgotten, that all things, living and inert, have a part in our relationship with life itself. The tree branch carvings illustrate how man is just a branch of the larger organic cosmos. Where Man and Nature become one....

Robert Hargrave - Beauty is often found in unexpected places. Few people would expect anything made from plywood to be beautiful, yet they are surprised and intrigued when they learn this fact about my work. I laminate a very special Birch plywood from Russia to a darker Lauan plywood from Indonesia, then carve them to reveal the previously hidden core. The results are often compared to some rare and exotic wood, skillfully brought to life. The Plywood Sculpture line consists of nearly seventy contemporary designs that are functional as well as decorative. There are over two dozen mirrors in many shapes and sizes. The designs range from figurative to geometric, from celestial to functionally conservative. Several figurative sculptures are balanced by some furniture designs. The line is rounded out by many gift items, such as picture frames, boxes and other accessories." All of my designs have a fluid sense of movement, emphasized by the black glue line. The alternating light and dark woods have a variety of colors in natural, however dyed colors offer even more possibilities. Each piece is signed and given a smooth, maintenance free lacquer finish. A free, full color catalog is available upon request. ...

Dermot O'Brien - Over the past fifteen years i have developed my own very unique art form working with wood and light. Using light as an added dimension to highlight the spaces between the wood a new sculpture is created. The sculptures always consist of several shapes the light exploring and defining the relationship between the bodies....

Stefan Van Der Ende - My sculptures are Solutions for Non/existing Problems . Now is the time to collect them. They are rare and unique ,and there are not many of them , also due to the big amount of time it takes to make the biggerones in wood and stone . They are made dreaming/thinking and working intensively , whith the intention to be able communicate emotion through their abstract/associative visual appearence which relate to subconcious processes in the human mind .(specialy mine ofcourse ) There are often more pictures of one sculpture , because ,as you know you have to see sculptures from more sides , to get a good impression .

Mrs. Mathew Sumich - Mathew Sumich passed away in late 2012. His work is available through Judith Sumich or the Michael H. Lord Gallery, Palm Springs, CA. The following statement is in his own words The focus of my work - whether non-commissioned or commissioned - is to work with basic elements such as line, form, color, texture, etc., and to apply them to the principles of design, e.g., dealing with proportion, subordination, rhythm, balance, opposition, transition, harmony and contour continuation, and to deal with different media, e.g., steel, glass, paint, wood, cement, etc., and to find potential uses of the media, taking into consideration its use in the environment in which it is to be located. My interests have always been with line and plane i?1/2 the first elements of drawing. Line creates plane, plane creates depth, plane can advance or recede by the use of color. My art is fundamental, basic, simple design principles in action. Using structural design principles and having a good understanding of the environment, I am able to take any media i?1/2 steel, glass, wood, clay, canvas i?1/2 and create 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, or 4 dimensional adding the dimension of time objects. The final form, be it a painting, ...

Mrs. Mathew Sumich - Tzipi Biran - I try to express the feminine experience as a complete individual that is constantly engaged in fulfilling her independence and femininity. Parallel to this, I emphasize the potential of a harmonious and holistic connection within a nourishing, supporting and creative relationship between a couple, a promoting and protective partnership within a spiritual and physical connection. The figures in my works are like the dance of life in which the steps of one are adjacent, connecting, opposing, and supporting to that of others, creating a changing and constant movement. ...

Cecile Tissot - Statement in English and French/ Presentation en anglais et francais * * * * * * * * * * * * Born in 1970, currently lives and works in Paris and Boulogne-Billancourt. I have been sculpting for about 15 years, after I discovered carving in London in 1997. I have been since then following a personal way in sculpture, mostly in stone and wood carving. I also work directly in nature through landart projects. Most of my works deal with the sacred, emptiness, traces, and link presence and absence - I attempt to emphasise the shy, the almost-nothing, the sensitive. My latest works tend towards verticality and nomadism, in an attempt to create, through their installation, ephemerical holy places - small or big.

Berthold Neutze - Artists Statement Art from wood is either turned (pretty bowl), roughly hewed (pure artistic laziness) or from selected ugliness regarding to the choice of wood. The flashy the material the less you see the sloppy work of the artist Why do I use wood after all? Besides hard and splintery beechwood? The work is risky and tedious, demands concentration and sensitivity for the material's structure - thus a challenge for craftmanship. Together with the subtle texture and unexitedly tint of beechwood that makes it to my favourite material. Beechwood allows undisguised view towards the form language. The shiny smooth surface means a distance to ,,harsh" nature to me. The outcoming piece is a picture, not copy. The tactile dimension. There is this invitation to the spectator to touch it, to feel the inherent warmth of wood, to feel out the incorporated strings and muscles to append another dimension to his phantasy. Subject follows function. My abstract -, as well as the anthropo- and zoomorphic sculptures emerge from the curiosity what other structures evolution could find - or improve - to add another niche in nature. I mostly work without preceding drawings und start to work unintentionally; the ,,idea" evolves during the progress - the ...

Phillip Flockhart - STATEMENT After 50 years of image making, journeying through the Da Da, Constructivist, and Minimalist Schools 1970s-1980s I find that my work and my beliefs put me firmly in The School of Expressionism, although my continued belief in the work of Carl Jung, especially his Catalytic Exteriorisation Phenomenon adds another layer of understanding to the traditional Expressionists and places it somewhere more in the Spiritual. My art philosophy formulated over many years practice is actually always present in the content of my work, although themes come and go and reflect other areas of my life and which are influenced by the work of great artists like Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Juan Gris, Kurt Switters , Marc Chagall, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys the themes of my art, if examined retain the content of my work which has remained as it has for 35 years now the attempt to disseminate the picture plane to see through and beyond, with colour, real time space, Collage Relief, imagery or optical device, multi point perspective and opto-kinetism, to reveal the truth that lays beyond .... I believe that this is what Marc Rothko meant when he said that his paintings ...

Dieter Picchio-Specht - Art, creativity and imagination have always played an important part in my life, although I have only started to fully concentrate on painting a few years ago. This passion has always been part of me. I have finally given up my work as a general manager in industry - to dedicate all my time to painting. At last I do what I have always wanted to do. It is simply that a dream has finally come true. Even during my years at secondary school my paintings were awarded prizes and I should have enrolled in art classes after I passed my A-levels. In fact, a renowned company manufacturing ceramics offered me a scholarship, which I was unable to accept at the time. I have always kept up with painting as landscapes and images, abstract and impressionist. Since some years now I am able to paint full-time and fill canvas after canvas with my ideas. My new studio is right in the centre of the village of Arcegno, surrounded by wooded hills, near to Ascona, a well-known tourist centre at the Lago Maggiore in the South of Switzerland. I apply the paints directly to the canvas with a spatula. ...
